A heartfelt celebration under the rain at Casa de Playa and Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church
From Baltimore to Puerto Rico: Ready to document their story
As a destination wedding photographer, every story begins the moment I board a plane with my gear, ready to tell a new love story through images. This time, I traveled from Baltimore to San Juan to photograph Valerie and Kevin’s wedding. The next day brought steady rain, but that didn’t stop us from doing what we came to do—capture love, emotion, and connection.
We headed out to Hatillo, about an hour west of San Juan, to begin the big day at Casa de Playa Hotel.
Getting Ready at Casa de Playa
We arrived at the hotel and jumped right into Valerie’s getting ready session. The moment I saw her dress, I knew we were about to create something beautiful. Even with limited time, we managed to capture every meaningful detail—her gown, the accessories, and the warm energy of her five bridesmaids and her mother. Valerie was stunning in front of the camera, full of grace and presence.
Next up was Kevin, who got ready with his five groomsmen. Their energy was relaxed and fun—plenty of laughs, jokes, and a celebratory toast made it all feel natural. After a few quick portraits with Kevin, I returned to Valerie’s room to finish documenting the final touches of her makeup and hair while she shared a glass of champagne with her bridal crew.
Despite the rain, we took advantage of the indoor spaces for portraits and I made mental notes of a few outdoor spots, hoping the weather would clear later for couple portraits.
Ceremony at Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen
The ceremony took place at Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, right in the heart of Hatillo. As a wedding photographer in Puerto Rico, I love discovering new churches, and this one immediately stood out for its beautiful structure and high ceilings. It was a dream to photograph.
Kevin walked down the aisle with his mother. When he turned to see Valerie walking in, radiant and holding hands with both her parents, his face said it all. That moment pure, emotional, and unscripted is exactly why I do what I do. The ceremony was deeply moving, filled with loving glances, teary eyes, and heartfelt vows.
Couple Portraits: A lucky break in the rain
After some quick family portraits, we headed back to Casa de Playa for a few indoor shots. As I captured the reception details, I noticed that the rain had stopped. I checked the weather app—it looked like we had a 20-minute break. I turned to the couple and said:
"We’ve got 20 minutes of clear skies. Want to go for it?"
They instantly replied, “Let’s do it!”
With the help of the videographer, the wedding planner assistants, and the newlyweds, we made it happen. We worked together like a dream team, captured everything we needed outdoors, and as soon as we wrapped up… the rain returned. That short window felt like it opened just for them.
Reception: First dances and full-on celebration
Back inside, Valerie and Kevin kicked off their reception with a heartfelt first dance, followed by dances with their parents and a few warm toasts. Then the party really started. The energy, laughter, and connection between everyone filled the room. It was a celebration through and through—and my camera loved every second of it.
